Richard Charles Bates is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of St Andrews, UK. Professor Richard is a geophysicist with an interest in reconstructing past landscapes and in the digital capture of both tangible and intangible heritage. His research interests span from the natural sciences, social sciences and arts. Richard began his career in the USA working for a specialised geophysical contractor. Since returning to Scotland, Professor Richard has spent the last 30 yrs developing digital capture methods for a range of applications from environmental and climate studies to recording aspects of cultural heritage. Richard’s work has taken him to both poles, to the high mountain regions of S. America and the Himalayas and throughout the tropics. Working to make a difference is what drives Richard to be in the studies of climate impacts as well as the preservation of cultural past. For over 10 years, Richard has worked with Tanzania researchers based at the University of Dar es Salaam, National Museum of Tanzania, Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority as well as the Department of Antiquities at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Over the years, Richard has trained the next generation of educators and heritage practitioners, digitally documented various tangible and intangible heritage as well as raising public awareness on the values of various sorts of heritage.
